Romeo, Romeo – Where for art thou Romeo

Growing up with a famous name, Juliette, comes with a lot of ridicule. For every new person I meet I am always asked the same question, “Where is Romeo?” or “Who is your Romeo?” I have to let out the usual giggle (like I have never heard that one before lol) but everyone says it. You have to be polite. And they always think they are the first to say it and that they are very humorous but it is a joke that you live with all your life.

Even new teachers at school, found it necessary to taunt me with that joke in front of the whole class. Which meant at lunch time the topic of conversation amongst my friends was: who is my Romeo? And constantly telling boys they were my Romeo.

When you have a boyfriend or husband they were also part of the joke. “You should change your name to Romeo”. Or else my husband just gets nicknamed Romeo. He is use to it now and also lets out the same laugh like it is the first time he has heard that joke.

But don’t get me wrong, I love my name. I like it’s originality, and I have only met one other Juliet! I also love the fact my name is French and that it has romantic connotations. It is a beautiful sounding name and the name means little angel.

William Shakespeare’s novel Romeo and Juliet

I have always loved the Shakespeare novel, Romeo and Juliet, being a true romantic just adds to my love of the novel.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy that was written by William Shakespeare and it was one of his most popular novels/ plays.

The tragedy is about two families in a feud. Romeo is from one family and Juliet the other. They meet at a masquerade ball held for Juliet to fall in love with Paris, but plans are altered when Romeo and Juliet fall madly in love at first sight and agree to marry the next day.

Friar Laurence performs the ceremony, though at first was reluctant, but believed it might be the perfect way to end the feud between the families.

Later, Juliet’s father arranges for Juliet to marry Paris, unaware of her previous engagements. To overcome this, Friar Laurence organises for Juliet to take a sleeping potion to make her appear dead for the next 42 hours. Romeo was kept unaware of this plan, and finds Juliet, assuming she is dead. In light of the tragic scene laying before him, he drinks poison and dies. However, Juliet soon awakens to find the death of her lover, and in turn takes Romeo’s dagger and stabs herself.

The two families arrive and Friar explains the tragic story. The tragedy of the event brings both families together and this leads to the feud’s end.

I adore Baz Luhrmann’s adaption of Romeo and Juliet, staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. It is a modern take on a classic story. I really enjoy this movie and recommend it to everyone. It is one of my favourite movie interpretations.

Roller Coaster of Emotions

So this month has been an emotional time for myself as a mum, as my daughter has turned 18 and graduated from high school.

The family singing happy birthday to our daughter

To celebrate her 18th birthday, we had a party on the Friday night with her school friends and on the Saturday we had a party with family and family friends.

My daughter blowing out her candles

It was a lot of hard work to clean up after one party and get things organised for the next party, (don’t recommend this idea lol) but our efforts were well endured and everybody had a wonderful time at both parties.

My daughter really had a great time and received many wonderful gifts. But we were all exhausted after cleaning up on Sunday.

……………………………………………………….

The graduation was an emotional day for my daughter, her parents (me) and her friends. To see your daughter finish her schooling (year 12) is very emotional.

The tears began for me the minute she entered the auditorium and any time I seen her during the ceremony. My husband and I were very emotional. I still remember the day she began kindergarten like it was only last week. It was an exciting day but it was very emotional too.

It will take a long time to realise that my daughter can now come to a club with me and see a band, that she can drive me around and that she no longer attends school. It still really hasn’t sunk in! No more ironing school uniforms, no more helping with homework or assignments, no more encouraging the study, no more making lunches or recess. It is a whole different world now.

And for my daughter, no more teachers, no more asking to go to the bathroom, no more bells, no more school uniforms, no more timetables, no more homework and no more assemblies. Life has changed in so many ways. The possibilities are endless with university, work, love, friends, the future and life in general

Possibilities……….. possibilities ……….. possibilities ………..

Endless possibilities…

How exciting!!!!

The worries of being an 18 year olds parent don’t decrease, they just alter. Now you worry every time they drive off in a car, every party they attend or club, will they find work, is their choice of study a good choice, are they making healthy choices in life, are their relationships good choices. The worries are still endless! You don’t sleep until they are safe in their bed. Did I do enough as a parent, have I taught her to make the best choices in life? Will she drink? Do drugs? I know my daughter is sensible, but the thoughts still crosses your mind.

If I went back to 18 years old, what would I change? Probably nothing to be honest. I don’t believe in living with any regrets and I have enjoy my life.

I know my daughter will make the best choices in life and my husband and I are so very proud of her. She has turned into a wonderful, caring, beautiful and intelligent adult and we adore her.

The roller coaster ride of having an 18 year old graduate school is that you are happy that she is entering a new stage of her life but you get emotional of where has the time gone, where has my little girl gone, have you done enough to help her in life, will she be ok, and then the proudness you have for how successful and wonderful she has developed to an adult.

If you could go back to 18 would you make any changes? Have you been through the same experience of your child turning 18? How did you handle it? Let me know I would love to hear about your experience.

Women getting their points out there!

The bullet bra was actually created in 1939, but unfortunately WW2 put these plans on hold as women were needed to fill more traditionally male jobs and roles. Women joined nurse corps and the armed forces so that more men could be sent into combat.

After the lean years of WW2, women were getting their curves back in the prosperity of the post-war boom. The trend promoted an hourglass figure. They characterised round hips with belted jackets and a cinched waist and prominent breasts with bullet bras.

Bullet bras became popular due to actresses like Marilyn Monroe and Lana Turner, who was nicknamed the “Sweater Girl”

The bullet bra put breasts centre stage. Bullet bras allowed women to add a cup size to their busts. The bra emphasised bras with its axis perpendicular to the breasts, and featured spiral stitching that emphasised the cone shaping. It had a cone centre on the nipples.

With the onset of television advertisements, this allowed for promotional opportunity and was a huge part in the bras popularity! Fashion and glamour became a huge part of women’s fashion choices in the 1950s.

The popularity of the bullet bra declined in the 1960s, due mainly in part to the new feminist philosophy.

It was reintroduced to the fashion world in 1990, by pop singer Madonna who began to wear bullet bras as outerwear as designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.

Other celebrities such as Katy Perry and Amy Winehouse adopted the bullet bra look on occasions in modern days.

American Graffiti

The drive-ins are playing retro movies and last Saturday the feature was the classic movie American Graffiti.

Skyline Drive in

The retro experience at the drive in.

Website: eventcinemas.com.au

I was so excited as I love the movie. There were some hot rods and classic cars, which my husband and I were hoping for.

Waiting for the movie to begin

Old car window speakers are still next to each car space, to add to the retro feel.

There is a retro diner with yummy food

American Grafitti is about the last day of summer holidays for a group of friends. The whole movie is set over one night, and involves cruising the streets of California and listening to the DJ, Wolfman Jack, play rock’n’roll music and all the adventures that they go through on this one night. It is the last night of their freedom before they become working adults. It is about the cruising and rock’n’roll culture of the times.

The music score is fantastic featuring songs such as Louie Louie, Rock Around The Clock, 16 Candles, That’ll Be The Day, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, At The Hop, Surfin’ Safari, Barbara Ann, The Great Pretender and many more. It is really worth a listen with the 41 great songs on it.

Stray Cat Strut

Stray Cats were a rockabilly band formed in America in 1979. Rockabilly music blends country with rhythm and blues. The band was formed by guitarist and vocalist Brian Setzer. Other members included double bassist Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom.

The band was influenced by music such as Gene Vincent, Bill Haley and the Comets and Eddie Cochran. They performed at the famous CBGB club, and gained a huge following. In addition to playing rockabilly music, they wore rockabilly style clothes, such as creepers, western shirts and drape jackets.

In 1981 they released their self-titled debut album, with hits such as Stray Cat Strut, Rock This Town and Runaway Boys. It was a huge success.

The second album, Gonna Ball, was not as successful as the first album. Following this they released their third album, Built for Speed, which went double platinum. It has hit songs such as Rock This Town, Stray Cat Strut,Rumble in Brighton and Built For Speed. They went on to produce more albums, along with “best of” albums. There was also changes to the original line-up in the band, but Brian remained as the singer.

In 2008/2009, Stray Cats toured Australia! These shows were a part of their Farewell Tour and completely sold out. They played at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney. What a show!!

In 1990, Brian formed a new band: The Brian Setzer Orchestra. It is a jump blues swing revival band. Jump blues is an up-tempo style of blues. It was popular in the 1940s and it is a combination of rhythm and blues and rock and roll.

Whenever anyone gets into my little VW Beetle, I am usually playing a Stray Cats CD… really loud! I just love their music (which is why I had to write this blog), it makes me feel so happy and gives me the urge to get up and dance. I absolutely love the beat of the double bass in their music. The sounds are great and the lyrics will make you want to sing along, as they are so catchy!

When you can, get a listen to some Stray Cats. I am sure you will love it, as much as me! You will probably feel like dancing too. (Though it’s a bit hard when you are driving) The double bass sound just makes the music, as well as Brian’s voice.

What is your favourite band? Message me, I would love to hear what you are listening to.

Retro Advertising……. try not to laugh!

You have to admit that today’s advertising has changed so much when compared to decades earlier. Some retro advertising will make you laugh, some will shock you, some condones violence and some are so sexist. Women really were advertised as second rate citizens and if you didn’t meet the standard or were ageing, they promoted negative thoughts in your mind.

Beauty

Lets start on the beauty advertisements.

These are quite funny. Washing away fat or middle age skin… we know that’s not likely. Also the promotion of putting on extra weight to get men is crazy! How about being happy with who you are. These double standards are ridiculous, yet it’s funny that this is still present in modern society. Celebrities are constantly shamed for being too fat or skinny… I guess some things don’t change!

Health

Then there was the heath advertising …

These are hilarious, don’t you think? First a nurse offering coke, not likely now since we all know the sugar content is so high! Taking bile beans makes you feel better and then you love your child. That’s ridiculous! Doctors advising to smoke cigarettes and pregnant women craving cigarettes….. I definitely don’t think so! What about the infra red light…. now that is definitely not a good idea.

Gift Ideas

Next let’s look at gift advertising!

I can’t believe the one to give your child a revolver. Wow! Let alone any member of the family. I adore retro Gay ware and would love it as a present (even though I have completed my collection) but advertisements back then were aimed at presents to make a good housewife. And Ronald Regan giving the gift of a carton of cigarettes wouldn’t be done today as the government media are supposed to encourage people to give-up.

Sexist

Next let’s look at the shockers that I think can be classified as sexist advertising!

These are unbelievable, right!? The one with the husband spanking his wife over her knee…. well doesn’t that just encourage abuse! Put your child in a corset to restrict her body from growing or she will not be beautiful….really?! So many advertisements outlined how women’s bodies had to be! We are all beautiful and don’t have to fit into one body type, which is what makes us all unique. Advertisements promoted women to achieve ridiculous standards in order to keep their husbands happy… The amount of sexism in these advertisements was so obvious! Seeing these, it is evident how much our advertisements and media industry have evolved.

Did you find these funny and some shocking? What retro advertisements have you seen? Send me photos and your thoughts. I would love to see them.
