Decorating a Vintage Dressing Table

If you can get your hands on old vintage dressing table it is an item you will adore.

This is my vintage dressing table handed down by my mother to me, I had to get one of the mirror panels replaced as it had a chip and they did the bevelled edge to suit  the others.

Vintage Dressing Tables come in a variety of styles.

This image was taken from google images. It features a 1970s style dressing table.

You can find plenty of dressing tables at charity stores and garage sales to suit your decor and your style.

You can also decorate or find a chair to suit your style and the style of your vintage dressing table.

I have painted this chair in a grey and recovered the seat with a Marilyn Monroe fabric from Spotlight

You can find these chairs at charity stores and garage sales! I will do a future blog on how to decorate chairs and lounges soon.

Then you can put add your vintage items to decorate the dressing table to add to your vintage look.

This a vintage hair dryer that I found at a garage sale years ago

This is a vintage vanity bag that was purchased from Recycology at the Vintage section of the Sydney Stitches and Craft Show. I filled it with a vintage hand mirror and brush, and some essential hair products to get that retro look

There are so many items that you can add to your dressing table. I love the look of the old hair brush sets. Some gems are even hand embroidered. My next items to add to the dressing table are some vintage perfume bottles.

Enjoy looking for the perfect vintage dressing table, chair and items to decorate the dressing table. Send me photos of your dressing table. Looking forward to seeing them.

The Many Uses of Vintage Suitcases

I absolutely adore vintage suitcases – the look of them and the history behind them. I especially love when you find a new suitcase and see the tags and names of the owner inside them, wondering who the bags owners were and which countries they had visited!

There are many ways to use your suitcases in your decor:

1. They are great for creating a succulent garden. Succulents or cacti do not need to be in dirt, so fill it up with rocks or bark instead. You can leave them in pots or plant them directly into the suitcase. This is a really quick and easy project!

2. Vintage hat boxes can be stacked on each other to be a great bedside stand. They also add plenty of storage for books, night creams or pyjamas. You will find them really handy! They are even great for storing all your hats. Place your bedside lamp on top or your alarm.

3. Vintage suitcases are perfect for extra storage. They look great on top of your wardrobe, like I have shown below. Try to get suitcases in similar shades or styles to add a sense of unity! I store my vintage overcoats in here as they take a lot of room in my wardrobe.

4. A vintage suitcase can be made into a bedside table. Get your hands on a vintage side table or the legs from one. I love the look of vintage designer Eames table legs. You can purchase the legs in second hand stores or online. Then to make the suitcase sturdy, screw the legs to a piece of wood, cut to the exact size of the suitcase, and screw the suitcase to the wood. Glue some vintage paper to the inside of the suitcase. Leave the lid of the suitcase up and put in your bedside lamp, or any other cute vintage items you would like to display. You could also use it as a side table in your lounge room and keep the lid closed, for extra storage.

5. Get your hands on a full set of vintage suitcases for a great statement piece in your room. My daughter got me the below full set for Christmas. I absolutely adore them!! Stacked on top of each other, they look fantastic and you will be surprised by the amount of storage that is available! Try to purchase suitcases in their original set collection, but if not, try to collect suitcases in similar style, shape and colour.

6. Another option is to screw the suitcases to a wall to make shelves. I found this by searching online on Pinterest and thought it was a great idea! This is a creative and unique way to show off both your vintage suitcase collection and vintage artefacts you display on top. I have not tried out this DIY project, but I found a handy step-by-step intractable on how to complete this. Check it out here.

7.Vintage suitcases are also excellent to use for the original intention – luggage bags when going on vacation. Vintage suitcases are always large and spacious for your items and made with quality so are always hard-wearing and durable. Their durability will make them last forever! The vintage authenticity will add a retro look to your own outfit and will look totally unique and different!

8. Other ideas are to screw in small legs and add a cushion and decorate for a cute dog or cat bed. The lid of the suitcase can be used to store your pet’s toys! You can open a larger suitcase and add in some shelves buy cutting wood to size and screwing them in place to make shelves. A great idea for stacking books or CDs. My final idea is to  put legs on the bottom of the suitcase, remove the top, add foam filling and cover it with material, for a funky footstool.

Enjoy looking for the perfect vintage suitcases to suit your personality and finding many more creative uses for them. Let me know if you have any other ideas!

How to Achieve a Retro Kitchen

There are many ways to achieve a retro style kitchen. I am going to give you some ideas on how to achieve your own retro kitchen.

  1. Combining both authentic vintage and modern retro style items

Above you can see I have grouped together vintage tins, a lollie machine & mincer, with retro look items such as the milkshake maker & icecream holders.

Below are authentic vintage milkshake cups and a 1950’s cat ornament, mixed with a collection of new retro items. I also made the gingham curtains to add to the retro look.

2. Vintage Canisters

You can purchase vintage canisters to add to the retro feel of your kitchen! I have collected the GayWare canister set as I love the colour range and mid-century lettering. They are such a statement piece. You can purchase them piece by piece or as a set. I personally found it less expensive to buy them all seperately.

1950s GayWare canisters. The larger ones are for flour, sugar, rice, tea and coffee. The smaller ones are for spices: cinnamon, allspice, ginger, chives and nutmeg.

There is a variety of brands that you can purchase including Gayware, Nally ware, Bakelite, Villa ware, Pyrex, Willow, Nylex, aluminium or enamel. They come in a variety of colours in styles.  I have also purchased 1920 – 1930s enamel canisters.

Enamel Canisters

Adding to this collection, I have also purchased matching saucepans & treats canisters!

The saucepans and pots are on a vintage pot stand.

3. Vintage Kitchen Items

Vintage milk canister and vintage scales

Assorted vintage items around the kitchen adds to the retro feel in the kitchen.

Vintage fruit bowl and matching magazine stand can be used for recipe book holders.

4. Do it Yourself projects

You can create retro pictures to add in your kitchen! I have two stain glass panels from an old door framed in my kitchen. I glued panels in to white picture frames. I’ve also purchased a retro-look image from Spotlight  and have framed it in a gold vintage frame. I backed the image with a gingham material  background. You could use a picture from a magazine, for another cheap alternative!

Also, as mentioned above, I made gingham curtains to add to the retro look of my kitchen. Making curtains is an easy and fun project, that can allow you to be creative in your home. I will post a step by step guide on how to create customisable curtains for your own home in the future.

You can find vintage kitchen items online, second hand shops, garage sales or markets. I have purchased most of mine through online stores, eBay, Gumtree, second hand stores, garage sales and trash and treasure markets. Go for bright colours and add some modern items with a retro feel. Modern retro items can be found in and kitchen stores.

Enjoy the shopping and decorating for your retro kitchen!!

The Beauty of Vintage Mirrors

Over time I have had the opportunity to purchase a few vintage mirrors. Last weekend I had the pleasure of adding two more mirrors to my collection. At the moment they are my favourites!

These two were a bargain online from a lovely ebayer and I was able to purchase each one at $15. Bargain… I know!! Lucky me! I had been looking to purchase more vintage mirrors for a few years and I had been outbid on quite a few, but I was lucky to have purchased these beauties. The etched one is a huge 72cm and the oval one is 75cm. I was shocked at how big they were and the great condition they were still in so I added them to a feature wall in my lounge room, with my original smaller scalloped edged one.

In my bedroom, I have a black Victorian Style mirror with two matching picture frames.

And a Victorian mirror in a cast iron stand that was my mother-in-laws which she had purchased overseas years ago.

I also have this early 1940s mirror which needs to be refurbished. I am trying to find a genuine mirror repairer to do this.

You can tell if a mirror is a genuine item by its weight, the frame, the double chain on the backboard, the screws and the cast iron clasps to hold the mirror in place. The mirror glass is also a clear indication of its age, it may have oxidation and scratches, which are signs of age. The mirror glass should also have slight waves or bubbles whereas modern reproductions will not.

Vintage mirrors are a great accessory in any room and can be a feature on any wall! Enjoy your vintage mirror shopping. I know I did!! You will be surprised by the variety and options that are available and hopefully you get a great price too.
