How to Achieve a Retro Kitchen

There are many ways to achieve a retro style kitchen. I am going to give you some ideas on how to achieve your own retro kitchen.

1. Combining both authentic vintage and modern retro style items

Above you can see I have grouped together vintage tins, a lollie machine & mincer, with retro look items such as the milkshake maker & icecream holders.

Below are authentic vintage milkshake cups and a 1950’s cat ornament, mixed with a collection of new retro items. I also made the gingham curtains to add to the retro look.

2. Vintage Canisters 

You can purchase vintage canisters to add to the retro feel of your kitchen! I have collected the GayWare canister set as I love the colour range and mid-century lettering. They are such a statement piece. You can purchase them piece by piece or as a set. I personally found it less expensive to buy them all seperately.

1950s GayWare canisters. The larger ones are for flour, sugar, rice, tea and coffee. The smaller ones are for spices: cinnamon, allspice, ginger, chives and nutmeg.

There is a variety of brands that you can purchase including Gayware, Nally ware, Bakelite, Villa ware, Pyrex, Willow, Nylex, aluminium or enamel. They come in a variety of colours in styles.  I have also purchased 1920 – 1930s enamel canisters.

 

 

 Adding to this collection, I have also purchased matching saucepans & treats canisters!

The saucepans and pots are on a vintage pot stand.

 

3. Vintage Kitchen Items

Assorted vintage items around the kitchen adds to the retro feel in the kitchen.

Vintage fruit bowl and matching magazine stand can be used for recipe book holders. 

4. Do it Yourself projects

You can create retro pictures to add in your kitchen! I have two stain glass panels from an old door framed in my kitchen. I glued panels in to white picture frames. I’ve also purchased a retro-look image from Spotlight  and have framed it in a gold vintage frame. I backed the image with a gingham material  background. You could use a picture from a magazine, for another cheap alternative!

 

 

Also, as mentioned above, I made gingham curtains to add to the retro look of my kitchen. Making curtains is an easy and fun project, that can allow you to be creative in your home. I will post a step by step guide on how to create customisable curtains for your own home in the future.

You can find vintage kitchen items online, second hand shops, garage sales or markets. I have purchased most of mine through online stores, eBay, Gumtree, second hand stores, garage sales and trash and treasure markets. Go for bright colours and add some modern items with a retro feel. Modern retro items can be found in and kitchen stores.
