In the kitchen…

Retro canisters can really brighten up your kitchen! Canisters, such as Gayware, are not sealed tight and so should not be used to keep things fresh over long periods of time. But they are handy for things when clipped closed in their packaging like biscuits, cereals, flour, pasta, lollies, bread, nuts, herbs, etc… The older enamel canisters, such as the ones pictured below with green writing, are heavier and do seal a bit better, though not suction sealed.

There is a wide range of brands and styles to choose in retro canisters. My favourites are Gayware as I love the look of the colour choices and the lettering, as they really pop on my kitchen shelves. What is your favourite?

Also, without their lids, the larger ones are handy for holding your kitchen utensils if you leave them displayed on your bench. Then this allows for easily accessing your utensils while you cook. I love it as it makes time in the kitchen quick and easy. I am by no means a 1950s housewife! 😉

In the bathroom…

Canisters are handy for holding perfumes, moisturisers and other skin care items. Also, they’re great for all your spare or extra items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and so on. Another use is for all your first aid items like bandaids, bandages, antiseptic creams, as they are easy to grab. I have put my canisters on a little book shelf in my bathroom. It keeps everything tidy and handy and looks fantastic in my retro-inspired bathroom. As you can see I love organisation in my life and especially in my bathroom!

In the Laundry…

Retro canisters can be used for holding your washing detergent and stain remover products. They are a tidier alternative than having ugly and boring washing powder boxes on display in your retro laundry. It keeps everything handy and it’s only a matter of lifting the lid to scoop out the powder, and replace lid. How handy!

In the bedroom…

Canisters can be used for holding your different jewellery, makeup products, brooches, hair accessories, moisturisers, vitamins, medications, keepsakes, bills, reminders, sewing items or any other small items… All those items growing in your bedside table can be organised in a tidy and fashionable way with retro canisters!

In the garden…

Canisters can be used for pot plants or holding your little gardening tools. I don’t have any in my garden yet but I found these ideas online. It has inspired me with the extra canisters I have to put them to a creative use to make some cute pot plants! I will let you know how I go in a future blog!

With all this organising it is just a matter of remembering which colour canister or which letter stores which items. You could even add lettering to  the front to remember what is in the canister or leave it blank. It is up to you! The other thing to remember is if the canister has the original lettering on it. Turn it around! You don’t want a flour canister in your bathroom…  A plain canister is a better alternative.

I hope this blog has given you some inspirational ideas for the different uses of retro canisters other than in the kitchen!

Back soon…..

Ridiculously Retro Xx
