Fernhill House

On Darug Country, in Mulgoa Valley at the foot of the Blue Mountains there is a beautiful heritage cottage. There is exceptional landscape around the cottage. The historic house is sandstone, built in the late 1830s, and is a wonderful example of grand Australian historic architecture. It was home to early British colonists and the Aboriginal people who lived on the plains surrounding the cottage. It was owned by William Cox and his sons through land grants.

Today, the Estate of Fernhill House is on 423 hectares. The house is still in its original state but is unfurnished. There was an open day recently, and I took the opportunity to attend. It was fantastic! I learnt so much about the history of the house and how the government has now taken over the ownership. We were taken on tours and provided so much information on the history of the property and Aboriginal history of the area. It was a fantastic experience and a step back in time that we thoroughly enjoyed.

The above photos are of the surroundings of the estate. It was picturesque surroundings. There is also, majestic horses that are agisted on the property.

The above are photos of some of the outer buildings on the grounds of the Fernhill Estate

Above is a photo of the prestigious homestead and below is photos within the house. You will see the exquisite details that they put into the features, such as the lacework on the ceilings. The walls in the formal lounge were red fabric. The windows had wood coverings on the inside that closed up the windows. The curtains were divine thick fabric.

If you ever get the chance to go to Fernhill Estate then I highly recommend that you take up the opportunity. I do not know when they are going to do more open houses but it is well worth the day out. My photos do not do this experience any justice.

Back soon….
