I recently hosted a 1950’s style BBQ and invited some friends. Let me tell you how I went about preparing for my 1950s themed event!
Firstly, the dress code was 1950s style. This made for excellent themed photos and great memories!
- The men dressed in jeans with rockabilly shirts or t-shirts. They rocked slicked hair and pompadours. They all put in a great effort!
- The woman all wore 50s full skirts or dresses, petticoats, gloves, scarves, brooches and cat eye glasses. They wore quiffs , flowers and victory rolls. Everybody put in such an effort!
For the setting, I used long tables with white table clothes and white chairs to accentuate the colourful 1950s tableware accessories I used. These included vintage dinnerware set and bone handled cutlery. I also used brightly coloured retro items and bowls to hold different items like salads, fruits, and lollies. Each person was given a glass mug with a retro striped straw.
I also created a photo wall to take some great individuals photos. I purchased a vine wall from Kmart and hung strands of fake red roses upon it. In front, I placed a flamingo and laid some red carpet. As you can see it looked great in the photos!
Yes, I even dressed up my dog with a red scarf.
We played 1950s music through my jukebox!
We tried to find some 1950s recipes to cook for the BBQ. For entree we made salmon mousse canapés, devilled eggs and cheese balls. For the main meals we had a normal BBQ with meat, sausages and salads. For dessert, we had a delicious gelato cake! On the outside layer, it had individual cones with a scoop of gelato and the inside was made of layers of gelato. It was such a cool cake, and so delicious!
It was purchased from Pure Gelato!
The day was a great success. Everyone had a wonderful time.
I hope my ideas and tips help to inspire you to hold a 1950s themed BBQ. I am sure you will enjoy it. Let me know how it went. I would love to hear!
