When on the hunt in second hand stores, do you know the ceramics or pottery to look out for? When you find an item that you like, turn it upside down to see where it is made. Vintage ceramics that are Made in Japan are quite valuable.
My most desirable and sought after ceramic figurines is what is known as Japanese Vintage Kitsch Ceramics. This ranges from 1950s to 1960s.
Japanese pieces made prior to 1926 will have hand painted – Made in Japan. Pieces made after 1926 will be stencilled – Made in Japan. Items marked occupied Japan are from 1945 to 1952. These are items that were made in Japan for export.
Vintage ceramics are sturdier than newer ones and much heavier.
Below is some examples of ceramic figurines that are Made in Japan, that I have purchased over my years of collecting

By inspecting your figurine or pottery and conducting diligent research you will be able to determine its true value and collectibility. Or, you could just buy it for the simple fact that you love it. But it is interesting to know it’s true worth and know you got it for a bargain price!
Enjoy your hunt! Let me know if you find something unique at a bargain price. It is so exciting!
